Uw tweede prioriteit

Delen:

Which AI chatbots matter most for your business? For most companies, ChatGPT is the safest first priority. Your second priority depends on who your buyers are and which tools they already use. That could be Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Perplexity. Most of the groundwork overlaps, so you rarely have to choose one engine and give up the others.

This guide skips the per-engine mechanics and answers one question: where should limited time and budget go first?

The short answer: start with ChatGPT, then follow your buyer

ChatGPT is the default starting point for most businesses. G2’s 2026 AI Search Insight Report found that ChatGPT comes out on top across every industry and company size it measured. The size of that lead varies a lot by segment.

That variation is what matters for prioritization. The same report found:

  • Manufacturing: ChatGPT’s lead drops to nearly 10 points below its average, and Gemini picks up 23%.
  • Construction: a similar pattern to manufacturing.
  • Enterprise and large enterprise: Copilot holds a 10–13% share. G2 suggests this may come from Microsoft’s bundled distribution through Microsoft 365.
  • Small business (SMB): Claude has its strongest showing here, at 7.3%.

G2 draws a practical conclusion for vendors: there is no single AI answer about your brand. What ChatGPT says about you may differ from what Gemini says, or from what Copilot returns inside a buyer’s Microsoft 365 environment.

Keep the limits of this data in mind. These figures describe the respondents in G2’s report. Your market, country or niche may look different. Use them as a starting hypothesis, then confirm them with your own signals.

How to tell which AI chatbot your audience uses

You don’t need a research budget to find out where your buyers ask their questions. Combine three layers of evidence: industry data, company size and your own customer signals.

Layer 1: your industry

Start with the industry breakdown above. If you sell to manufacturing or construction, Gemini deserves a higher spot on your list than it would in other sectors. If you sell into retail, technology, healthcare or services, ChatGPT is still the logical first priority. Check how big its lead is before you decide how much weight to give a second engine.

Layer 2: the size of your buyer’s company

Company size changes the picture. For enterprise audiences, track Copilot: G2 reports a 10–13% share in enterprise and large enterprise segments and suggests Microsoft 365 distribution may help explain it. If you sell to small businesses and technical early adopters, keep an eye on Claude.

Layer 3: your own signals

Industry data tells you about the average buyer. Your own data tells you about yours. Useful checks:

Can you optimize for one chatbot without hurting the others?

Mostly, yes, if you focus on shared basics. Useful, distinctive content gives you a broad foundation across engines. It doesn’t guarantee equal visibility in each system, and results can differ per platform.

Google’s own guidance supports this. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI search says that, from Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. It adds that unique, compelling and useful content will likely influence your presence in generative AI search more than any other suggestion in the guide.

Google wrote this guidance from Google Search’s perspective. Treat it as a sensible baseline, not as proof of how every chatbot behaves. A page with a clear answer, a distinct point of view and solid facts is a good starting point, but ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity can still treat it differently. If you’re new to the concept, start with what generative engine optimization (GEO) is.

The real risk isn’t conflict between engines. It’s blind spots. If you only check one chatbot, you won’t notice when another describes your brand differently or leaves you out. Prioritize your effort, but monitor more than one engine.

When Bing indexing matters, whatever your priority

Bing is the one technical layer that affects several chatbots at once. That makes it worth fixing early, even if Bing isn’t where you’d normally put your attention.

  • ChatGPT: for search-driven answers, ChatGPT uses Bing as its underlying index. Around 87% of ChatGPT (SearchGPT) citations come from sites that are visible in Bing.
  • Microsoft Copilot: according to Microsoft’s documentation, when web search is enabled, Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Chat may fetch information from the Bing search service. Copilot generates a short search query from the user’s prompt and sends it to Bing.

So Bing indexing matters in two situations. The first is when ChatGPT is your top priority, which applies to most businesses. The second is when you sell to enterprise buyers who may use Copilot. Either way, a site that ranks in Google but is missing from Bing leaves a gap you can’t close with content alone.

Gemini is a separate case. Google says some Gemini responses are grounded on Search results, so Google indexing may matter for those responses. For a side-by-side view, see Google vs Bing for AI search visibility and citations. To check your setup, use the Bing indexing checklist for ChatGPT visibility.

Where to put limited effort first

If your time and budget are tight, work in this order:

  1. Fix indexing in both Google and Bing. Bing matters for ChatGPT and Copilot. Google indexing may matter for Gemini responses that are grounded on Search results.
  2. Publish useful, distinctive content that answers the questions your buyers ask. This gives you a shared foundation, even if results differ per engine.
  3. Pick your second engine using the matrix above and your own customer signals.
  4. Run the same prompts in several engines every month so you catch differences in how each one describes you.
  5. Re-check your priorities. The G2 data shows that preferences differ by segment. Your buyers’ habits may change too.

The hard part is steps two and four: publishing consistently and staying visible in more than one engine. De AI-aangedreven motor voor organische groei van Authora handles the content side for you.
